Sad To Hear

A hiker fell and died in New York's finger lakes region.

Yates County sheriff's deputies say Rodger Smith of Geneseo was hiking early Sunday afternoon in the High Tor State Wildlife Management Area in the town of Italy, on the southern end of Canandaigua Lake about 42 miles southeast of Rochester.

Deputies say Smith fell about 75 feet. Emergency crews from Yates and neighboring Ontario County helped rescue Smith from the wooded area.

He was taken by helicopter to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died.
